Why Shower Waterproofing Matters More Than the Tile

Here's a fact that surprises most homeowners: the tile and grout in your shower are not waterproof. Water passes through grout and, over time, even through tile. What actually keeps your walls and subfloor dry is the waterproofing system installed behind and beneath the tile — and it's the single most important part of any tile shower.

What waterproofing actually is

A properly built shower has a waterproof membrane on the walls, a correctly sloped and waterproofed pan, and sealed seams at every corner, niche, and pipe penetration. Modern systems use sheet or liquid-applied membranes and foam pans; traditional methods use a mortar bed and liner. Either way, it's a complete system that contains the water and directs it to the drain. Learn more on our shower waterproofing page.

Why cheap installers skip it

Waterproofing is invisible once the tile is on, which makes it the easiest place to cut corners — and the most dangerous. A shower that isn't waterproofed leaks behind the wall, and the damage — rot, mold, ruined subfloor — happens silently for months or years before you notice a stain on the ceiling below.

Signs your shower is failing

Loose or hollow-sounding tiles, a musty smell, grout that keeps cracking, and water stains below the bathroom all point to failed waterproofing. When that happens, regrouting or caulking won't fix it — the shower needs to be rebuilt with a proper system. It costs more than a patch, but it's the only real fix and it protects your home from far more expensive damage.

Do it right the first time

The lesson is simple: a beautiful shower that leaks is a disaster, so the waterproofing has to be done right. We build every shower with a complete waterproofing system. Ask us how we keep showers dry for decades.
